I'm going to be an author. WHAT?!

Subject line: Have you ever considered writing a book?

Date: 6/17/2014

My eyes skimmed the body of the email. It seemed kind of spammy. I googled some of the names it mentioned to make sure it wasn’t. They came up clear.

I had zero clue about publishing companies and agents. Write a book?  The idea was unfathomable to me. I’ve written a few things for Into the Gloss and Xovain, and of course there’s THE KLOG. But never, ever would I consider myself a worthy enough writer to be called an author. With skin school in full swing and Soko Glam, how could I even think about writing a book?

A few months later, I brought up the email to my friend, Jessamine, who’s in the publishing world and a writer herself. I told her about the opportunity but also my reservations: I was busy, and it was daunting to even think about.

She told me firmly, “Dream big, Charlotte. Dream big!”

Those words stuck with me.

I ended up calling up the agent that reached out to me with that email. Within a few weeks, we put together a proposal, and soon that proposal was distributed to all the top publishers in New York City.

To my surprise, a lot of them were interested -- and not only that, but they actually wanted to bid on it! In the proposal was only a sample chapter, just a taste of what the book would read like. Then here they were, asking for more.

“You have such a unique perspective on skin care and I want to read more!” one editor said. “Imagine that, a skin care book that’s actually informative and fun,” said another.

I was dreaming big, and things were happening.

Within a month and a half of meetings with publishers, I met my dream editor at the publishing house William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins! I knew she was the one because she and I were on the same page on timeline and the vision for my skin care book. Not to mention, she was excited about K-beauty and was eager to start her own new Korean skin care routine!

Lots of crazy stuff (all good :) happened between then and now that I will share with you in the coming weeks, but the point is: After a year in the making I’m happy to make the official announcement. (For those of you who read this post, this is Part 2 of things I’m super excited about this month.)

The Little Book of Skincare: Korean Beauty Secrets for Healthy, Glowing Skin is available for preorder and will be available at major retailers November 2015!

To say I’m excited is an understatement. I can’t wait for everyone to read it. The feedback I’ve gotten so far has been so encouraging.

I wrote it from my perspective: a Korean-American girl who moves to Seoul and experiences K-beauty for the first time. It obviously flips my world upside down and changes the way I think about my skin.

While I talk about my journey in my book, I also give you step-by-step instructions on how to achieve radiant, clear skin and how to pull off the no-makeup, makeup look -- something I didn’t know the first thing about before I lived in Korea.

And yes, there will be a chapter dedicated to the 10 step skin care routine, but most importantly, I dive deep into the science behind your skin and what each step does for you!

You’ll hear exclusive interviews from K-beauty influencers, sheet mask specialists, celebrities, makeup artists (i.e. Jeon Ji-Hyun’s official makeup artist!), and heads of R&D that make K-beauty possible. I even have a special travel section on how to shop for K-beauty in Seoul if you get a chance to visit!

For more info, take a look at our newly launched Little Book of Skincare website here! I’ll continue to share exciting new updates for the book via this website in the coming weeks, so look out for those.

Thank you so much for listening, and for all your support. I once mentioned that it’s all about leaning on each other, and this is one of those situations where that applies. This has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life, something I will never take for granted. Also, a special shout out to my agents Catherine Cho and Erin Niumata, the team at Soko Glam and especially Dave for supporting me throughout this crazy time. Thanks everyone for letting me DREAM BIG!
