Let's Talk About Acne

Pimples, hormonal acne, product breakouts, and bacne? You’re not alone! It’s time to have a heart to heart, and share everything we know on the best ways to prevent, treat, and soothe acne.

The first step is to understand what you are dealing with. It is also perfectly normal to be dealing with more than one type of acne at any given time.

Here are some of the most common types of acne we see:

Comedonal acne, also known as blackheads and whiteheads, are caused when hair follicles get clogged with trapped dirt, sebum, and debris.

Blackheads are open debris-filled pores that oxidizes when exposed to the air, which gives it the distinct appearance of looking grey or black

Whiteheads are similar to blackheads, but they are completely closed off at the surface, which can result in a small white or flesh colored bump.

Exfoliation is key to fixing this type of acne. Adding chemical exfoliation once or twice a week in your skincare routine can help your skin clear back up and prevent future breakouts. Some great AHAs to include in your routine include lactic acid and gycolic acid, and a great BHA to include is salicylic acid.

Inflammatory acne are lesions on the skin that become inflamed and infected. The infection causes red and tender bumps, which can also be filled with pus and bacteria. The redness is actually caused by the white blood cells that rush to the area to fight and treat the infection!

The types of inflammatory acne include papules and pustules.

Papules are small red bumps that can be hard to the touch.

Pustules are pus-filled pimples. They are red-rimmed with white or yellow pus in the center.

In addition to regular exfoliation, it is also great to add some anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial ingredients to help soothe your skin and fight inflammation. Some great anti-inflammatory ingredients to look out for include green tea extract and cica, and some great anti-microbial ingredients to add into your routine include propolis and tea tree oil.

Cysts and nodules tend to take longer to treat. They are formed when bacteria within the pore spreads and infects other nearby follicles, and are developed deep within the skin. Make sure you take great care with treating these as they can easily leave scars and hyperpigmentation.

Nodules are large, painful, hard lumps below the surface of the skin.

Cysts are extremely painful and can take on the appearance of boils. They are similar to nodules but they are softer to the touch and filled with pus.

In addition to regular exfoliation and adding anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial ingredients to your routine, we also recommend consulting with the dermatologist as treatment may require some additional lifestyle changes.

What’s a common cause we often see for acne? Dehydration! It is a common misconception that if you have oily or acne-prone skin, you should use skincare that dries out your skin. But this can be the very reason you are breaking out. When your skin is feeling extra dry, it will create excess oil to bring it back to its normal state.
